An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. macOS before 10.12.5 is affected. The issue involves the "HFS" component. It allows attackers to bypass intended memory-read restrictions via a crafted app.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was presented 05/15/2017 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Zero Day Initiative as HT207797 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6990 since 03/17/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
