The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2017 by Ian Beer (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero as HT207797 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-2507 since 12/01/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:
A validation issue was addressed with improved input sanitization.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100256 (Apple TV < 10.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
