A vulnerability has been found in MediaWiki (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. (1) ApiBlock.php, (2) ApiCreateAccount.php, (3) ApiLogin.php, (4) ApiMain.php, (5) ApiQueryDeletedrevs.php, (6) ApiTokens.php, and (7) ApiUnblock.php in includes/api/ in MediaWiki 1.19.x before 1.19.8, 1.20.x before 1.20.7, and 1.21.x before 1.21.2 allow remote attackers to obtain CSRF tokens and bypass the cross-site request forgery (CSRF) protection mechanism via a JSONP request to wiki/api.php.
The weakness was presented 09/03/2013 as Bug 49090 as not defined bug report (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4302 since 06/12/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
By approaching the search of inurl:ApiTokens.php/ApiUnblock.php/ApiLogin.php/ApiCreateAccount.php/ApiBlock.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69884 (Debian DSA-2753-1 : mediawiki - information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12744 (MediaWiki Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.21.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mediawiki.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
