This issue affects the function print_symbol_for_build_attribute of the file readelf.c of the component ELF File Handler. The print_symbol_for_build_attribute function in readelf.c in GNU Binutils 2017-04-12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid read and SEGV) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2017. The weakness was shared 05/18/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9044 since 05/17/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
