LibTIFF 4.0.7 bmp2tiff biWidth/biHeight memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF 4.0.7 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component bmp2tiff. The manipulation of the argument biWidth/biHeight as part of a BMP Image leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In LibTIFF 4.0.7, the program processes BMP images without verifying that biWidth and biHeight in the bitmap-information header match the actual input, leading to a heap-based buffer over-read in bmp2tiff.

The bug was discovered 05/07/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/21/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.maptools.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9117 since 05/21/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108657 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 17.10 : LibTIFF vulnerabilities (USN-3606-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171720 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2018:3879-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 12 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (108657) and SecurityFocus (BID 98581†). The entries VDB-81557, VDB-81883, VDB-81884 and VDB-92306 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
