A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in LibTIFF 4.0.5 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function LZWEncode of the file tif_lzw.c. The LZWEncode function in tif_lzw.c in the bmp2tiff tool in LibTIFF 4.0.6 and earlier, when the "-c lzw" option is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read) via a crafted BMP image.

The weakness was shared 04/07/2016 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-3621 since 03/21/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
