A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer (Web Browser) (version now known) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 08/13/2013 with VUPEN as MS13-059 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 04/07/2017). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
The specific flaw exists within the processing of data shared to the broker by the sandboxed process. The issue lies in the failure to validate objects after a sandboxed process has terminated.
