Details
A vulnerability was found in Sophos Web Protection Appliance up to 3.7.9. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_referers of the file opt/ws/bin/sblistpack of the component Shell. The manipulation of the argument domain with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The get_referers function in /opt/ws/bin/sblistpack in Sophos Web Appliance before 3.7.9.1 and 3.8 before 3.8.1.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the domain parameter to end-user/index.php.
The weakness was disclosed 09/06/2013 by Francisco Falcon with Core as Pre-authentication OS command injection vulnerability as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at coresecurity.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Sophos. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4983 since 07/29/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/30/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70142 (Sophos Web Protection Appliance Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 3.7.9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17116.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (28175), Tenable (70142), SecurityFocus (BID 62263†), OSVDB (97029†) and Secunia (SA54680†). The entry VDB-10176 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
