A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-slsk.c of the component SoulSeek Dissector. In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.6 and 2.0.0 to 2.0.12, the SoulSeek dissector could go into an infinite loop. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-slsk.c by making loop bounds more explicit.
The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2017 by OSS-Fuzz (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9346. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100670 (Wireshark 2.0.x < 2.0.13 / 2.2.x < 2.2.7 Multiple DoS (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370421 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2017-22 to wnpa-sec-2017-33)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
