Wireshark up to 2.2.6 SoulSeek Dissector packet-slsk.c infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file epan/dissectors/packet-slsk.c of the component SoulSeek Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.6 and 2.0.0 to 2.0.12, the SoulSeek dissector could go into an infinite loop. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-slsk.c by making loop bounds more explicit.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2017 by OSS-Fuzz (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9346. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100670 (Wireshark 2.0.x < 2.0.13 / 2.2.x < 2.2.7 Multiple DoS (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370421 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2017-22 to wnpa-sec-2017-33)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100670) and SecurityFocus (BID 98799†). The entries VDB-101894, VDB-101895, VDB-101896 and VDB-101898 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
