Wireshark up to 2.2.6 ROS Dissector packet-ros-template.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9347. The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the file epan/dissectors/asn1/ros/packet-ros-template.c of the component ROS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In Wireshark 2.2.0 to 2.2.6, the ROS dissector could crash with a NULL pointer dereference. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/asn1/ros/packet-ros-template.c by validating an OID.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2017. The weakness was presented 06/02/2017 by OSS-Fuzz (Website). The advisory is available at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9347. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by OSS-Fuzz and been published 3 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100670 (Wireshark 2.0.x < 2.0.13 / 2.2.x < 2.2.7 Multiple DoS (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370421 (Wireshark Multiple Vulnerabilities (wnpa-sec-2017-22 to wnpa-sec-2017-33)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42124), Tenable (100670) and SecurityFocus (BID 98800†). See VDB-101894, VDB-101895, VDB-101896 and VDB-101897 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
