A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Access 2007/2010/2013 (Database Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Access File Handler. The manipulation as part of a ACCDB File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Access 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, and 2013 in Microsoft Office allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Access file, aka "Access Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-3155.
The weakness was presented 09/10/2013 by Kaveh Ghaemmaghami as MS13-074 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Secunia. The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3157 since 04/17/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69834 (MS13-074: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2848637)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110218 (Microsoft Office Access Multiple Memory Corruption Vulnerabilities (MS13-074)).
Applying the patch MS13-074 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13579.
