A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Microsoft Word and Sharepoint 2003 SP3/2007 SP3/2010 SP1 (Word Processing Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Office File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Microsoft Word Automation Services in SharePoint Server 2010 SP1, Word Web App 2010 SP1 in Office Web Apps 2010, Word 2003 SP3, Word 2007 SP3, Word 2010 SP1, Office Compatibility Pack SP3, and Word Viewer allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted Office document, aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-3847, CVE-2013-3848, and CVE-2013-3849.
The weakness was shared 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-067 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3858 since 06/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/24/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69827 (MS13-067: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2834052)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110216 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-072)).
Applying the patch MS13-067 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
