A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to Server 2016 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nt!NtNotifyChangeDirectoryFile of the component KASLR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was shared 06/13/2017 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as KB4022714 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-0299 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100759 (KB4022714: Windows 10 Version 1511 June 2017 Cumulative Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91405 (Microsoft Windows Security Update August 2017).
Applying the patch KB4022714 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
