A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Skype for Business when the software fails to sanitize specially crafted content, aka "Skype for Business Remote Code Execution Vulnerability".

The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2017 with Microsoft as KBClick to Run as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-8550 since 05/03/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Skype for Business and Microsoft Lync Servers fail to properly sanitize specially crafted content. An authenticated attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute HTML and JavaScript content in the Skype for Business or Lync context. An attacker could use this vulnerability to open a web page using the default browser, open another messaging session with someone else, or potentially trigger other URIs defined on the client’s system for another application. To exploit this vulnerability an attacker could invite a user to an instant message session and then send a message that contains specially crafted JavaScript content. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Skype for Business and Lync Servers sanitize content.

As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100782 (Security Update for Microsoft Office Products (June 2017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110299 (Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps Security Update June 2017).

Applying the patch KBClick to Run is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
