wp-admin/includes/post.php in WordPress before 3.6.1 allows remote authenticated users to spoof the authorship of a post by leveraging the Author role and providing a modified user_ID parameter.
The weakness was presented 09/11/2013 by Anakorn Kyavatanakij as confirmed changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at codex.wordpress.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4340 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-admin/includes/post.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69895 (Debian DSA-2757-1 : wordpress - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12751 (WordPress Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at core.trac.wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
