Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function ieee_object_p of the file bfd/ieee.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The ieee_object_p function in bfd/ieee.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file, as demonstrated by mishandling of this file during "objdump -D" execution. NOTE: this may be related to a compiler bug.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was released 06/19/2017 by Alex as Bug 21582 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-9748 since 06/18/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Alexandre Adamski and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105225 (openSUSE Security Update : binutils (openSUSE-2017-1330)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42202), Tenable (105225) and SecurityFocus (BID 99110†).
