Details
A vulnerability has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file opcodes/rx-decode.opc. The manipulation as part of a Binary File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
opcodes/rx-decode.opc in GNU Binutils 2.28 lacks bounds checks for certain scale arrays, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted binary file, as demonstrated by mishandling of this file during "objdump -D" execution.
The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was presented 06/19/2017 by Alex as Bug 21587 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9750 since 06/18/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Alexandre Adamski and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105627 (GLSA-201801-01 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42198), Tenable (105627) and SecurityFocus (BID 99118†). See VDB-98344, VDB-98345, VDB-98370 and VDB-98371 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
