Details
A vulnerability was found in Django up to 1.6 (Content Management System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file template/defaulttags.py. The manipulation of the argument ALLOWED_INCLUDE_ROOTS with the input value ../ leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Django 1.4.x before 1.4.7, 1.5.x before 1.5.3, and 1.6.x before 1.6 beta 3 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a file path in the ALLOWED_INCLUDE_ROOTS setting followed by a .. (dot dot) in a ssi template tag.
The weakness was published 09/10/2013 by Rainer Koirikivi as Security releases issued as confirmed advisory (Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at djangoproject.com. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4315 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69848 (Debian DSA-2755-1 : python-django - directory traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195918 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-django Vulnerabilities (USN-1967-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.7 or 1.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at djangoproject.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
