A vulnerability was found in Django up to 1.6 (Content Management System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Authentication Framework. The authentication framework (django.contrib.auth) in Django 1.4.x before 1.4.8, 1.5.x before 1.5.4, and 1.6.x before 1.6 beta 4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a long password which is then hashed.
The weakness was released 09/15/2013 as Security Release Notes as confirmed blog post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at djangoproject.com. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1443 since 01/26/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70066 (FreeBSD : django -- denial-of-service via large passwords (05dc6efa-2370-11e3-95b7-00e0814cab4e)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195918 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Python-django Vulnerabilities (USN-1967-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at djangoproject.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
