SAP NetWeaver up to 7.30 Web Application path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SAP NetWeaver up to 7.30 (Solution Stack Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Web Application. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in SAP NetWeaver 7.x allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 09/13/2013 by Pavel Toporkov with Positive Technologies as PT-2012-24: Directory traversal in SAP NetWeaver as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at en.securitylab.ru. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-5751 since 09/16/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121483 (SAP NetWeaver Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87121), SecurityFocus (BID 62391†), OSVDB (97350†) and Secunia (SA54809†). en.securitylab.ru is providing further details.
