Summary
A vulnerability was found in GnuPG and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Subkeys. The manipulation results in cryptographic issue. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4351. The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GnuPG. Affected is an unknown code of the component Subkeys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
GnuPG 1.4.x, 2.0.x, and 2.1.x treats a key flags subpacket with all bits cleared (no usage permitted) as if it has all bits set (all usage permitted), which might allow remote attackers to bypass intended cryptographic protection mechanisms by leveraging the subkey.
The weakness was presented 03/12/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4351 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75157 (openSUSE Security Update : gpg2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1526-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390142 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for gnupg2 (OVMSA-2018-0239)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.14 or 2.0.21 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at gnupg.org. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75157), SecurityFocus (BID 62857†), OSVDB (97339†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41867†). Further details are available at tools.ietf.org. See VDB-7239, VDB-7240 and VDB-10614 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
