A vulnerability was found in FreeRADIUS up to 2.2.9/3.0.14 (Network Authentication Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function make_secret. An FR-GV-201 issue in FreeRADIUS 2.x before 2.2.10 and 3.x before 3.0.15 allows "Read / write overflow in make_secret()" and a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 06/18/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/17/2017 by Guido Vranken (Website). The advisory is shared at freeradius.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-10978 since 07/06/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101823 (CentOS 6 : freeradius (CESA-2017:1759)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157494 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for freeradius (ELSA-2017-1759)).
Upgrading to version 2.2.10 or 3.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
