A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 23.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function mozilla::layout::ScrollbarActivity. Use-after-free vulnerability in the mozilla::layout::ScrollbarActivity function in Mozilla Firefox before 24.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, Thunderbird before 24.0, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 2.21 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to image-document scrolling.
The weakness was presented 09/17/2013 by Nils as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-90 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird product because scripting is disabled, but are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1735 since 02/13/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69936 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1268)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121458 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1268)).
Upgrading to version 24.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
