Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 23.0 (Web Browser). Affected is the function nsFloatManager::GetFlowArea. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the nsFloatManager::GetFlowArea function in Mozilla Firefox before 24.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, Thunderbird before 24.0, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 2.21 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted use of lists and floats within a multi-column layout.
The weakness was shared 09/17/2013 by Aki Helin with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-89 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird product because scripting is disabled, but are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1732 since 02/13/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021).
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69936 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1268)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121458 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1268)).
Upgrading to version 24.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org.
