A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FFmpeg 0.11/0.11.1/0.11.2/0.11.3 (Multimedia Processing Software). This affects an unknown code block of the file libavcodec/h264.c of the component Alternating Bit Depths Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. libavcodec/h264.c in FFmpeg before 0.11.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via vectors related to alternating bit depths in H.264 data.
The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2012 as h264: set parameters from SPS whenever it changes as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4358 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 0.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.libav.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
