Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ntp up to 4.2.7 (Network Management Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file ntpd/ntp_config.c of the component ntpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
ntp_openssl.m4 in ntpd in NTP before 4.2.7p112 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via a crafted statistics or filegen configuration command that is not enabled during compilation.
The bug was discovered 10/11/2015. The weakness was presented 07/21/2017 by Miroslav Lichv (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-5195 since 07/01/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85751 (Amazon Linux AMI : ntp (ALAS-2015-593)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157189 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for ntp (ELSA-2016-0780)).
Upgrading to version 4.2.7p112 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling udp/123 (ntp). The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
