CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type conversion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-704. The product does not correctly convert an object, resource, or structure from one type to a different type. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The ULOGTOD function in ntp.d in SNTP before 4.2.7p366 does not properly perform type conversions from a precision value to a double, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted NTP packet.

The weakness was presented 10/22/2015 by Miroslav Lichvar with Red Hat as cisco-sa-20151021-ntp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5219 since 07/01/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88026 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : SNTP vulnerability (K60352002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157189 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for ntp (ELSA-2016-0780)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
