A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in LibTIFF 4.0.8 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function _TIFFCheckMalloc. The manipulation of the argument td_imagelength with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. In LibTIFF 4.0.8, there is a denial of service vulnerability in the TIFFOpen function. A crafted input will lead to a denial of service attack. During the TIFFOpen process, td_imagelength is not checked. The value of td_imagelength can be directly controlled by an input file. In the ChopUpSingleUncompressedStrip function, the _TIFFCheckMalloc function is called based on td_imagelength. If we set the value of td_imagelength close to the amount of system memory, it will hang the system or trigger the OOM killer.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2017. The weakness was published 07/26/2017 with Ant-financial Light-Year Security Lab (Website). The advisory is available at gist.github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-11613 since 07/25/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171667 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2018:3289-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
