A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apache Struts 2.0.0/2.3.15.1 (Programming Tool Software). Apache Struts 2.0.0 through 2.3.15.1 allows remote attackers to bypass access controls via a crafted action: prefix.
The weakness was published 09/17/2013 by Zhangyan (L) with Huawei PSIRT as S2-018 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cwiki.apache.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4310 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70168 (Apache Struts 2 'action:' Parameter Prefix Security Constraint Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 150165 (Apache Struts Multiple Vulnerabilities (S2-018, S2-019)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.15.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at struts.apache.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
