A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils up to 2.29 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function bfd_mach_o_i386_canonicalize_one_reloc of the file bfd/mach-o-i386.c of the component libbfd. The bfd_mach_o_i386_canonicalize_one_reloc function in bfd/mach-o-i386.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29 and earlier, allows remote attackers to cause an out of bounds heap read via a crafted mach-o file.
The bug was discovered 07/21/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/04/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-12452 since 08/04/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
