The PPTP implementation in Cisco IOS 12.2 and 15.0 through 15.3, when NAT is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device reload) via crafted TCP port-1723 packets, aka Bug ID CSCtq14817.
The weakness was disclosed 09/25/2013 as cisco-sa-20130925-nat as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5481 since 08/22/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70320 (Cisco IOS Software Network Address Translation Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20130925-nat)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
