Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to Server 2016 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component JET Database Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft JET Database Engine in Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, 1703, and Windows Server 2016 allows a remote code execution vulnerability due to buffer overflow, aka "Microsoft JET Database Engine Remote Code Execution Vulnerability".
The bug was discovered 08/08/2017. The weakness was published 08/08/2017 with Zero Day Initiative as KB4034668 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-0250 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/07/2021). The advisory points out:
A buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the Microsoft JET Database Engine that could allow remote code execution on an affected system. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
