A vulnerability was found in GNU Patch up to 2.7.2 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function set_hunkmax of the component diff File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
GNU patch 2.7.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and segmentation fault) via a crafted diff file.
The bug was discovered 01/23/2015. The weakness was disclosed 08/25/2017 by Laszlo Boszormenyi (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9637 since 01/22/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81112 (Fedora 21 : patch-2.7.3-1.fc21 (2015-1134)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171115 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for patch (SUSE-SU-2018:1162-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
