Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU Patch up to 2.6.1 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file util.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in util.c in GNU patch 2.6.1 and earlier allows user-assisted remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a filename that is specified with a .. (dot dot) or full pathname, a related issue to CVE-2010-1679.
The weakness was presented 03/11/2011 by Jakub Wilk as Bug 667529 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4651 since 01/03/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84339 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 14.10 : patch vulnerabilities (USN-2651-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171115 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for patch (SUSE-SU-2018:1162-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.savannah.gnu.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84339), SecurityFocus (BID 46768†), Secunia (SA43663†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-30291†).
