Integer overflow in QuickLook, as used in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.7 and MobileSafari in Apple iOS before 4.2.7 and 4.3.x before 4.3.2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a Microsoft Office document with a crafted size field in the OfficeArtMetafileHeader, related to OfficeArtBlip, as demonstrated on the iPhone by Charlie Miller and Dion Blazakis during a Pwn2Own competition at CanSecWest 2011.

The weakness was disclosed 03/11/2011 by Charlie Miller as HT4581 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1417. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52754 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119464 (Apple iWork Numbers / Pages Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10639.
