PHP before 5.3.4 accepts the \0 character in a pathname, which might allow context-dependent attackers to bypass intended access restrictions by placing a safe file extension after this character, as demonstrated by .php\0.jpg at the end of the argument to the file_exists function.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2010. The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2011 by Stefan Esser as HT4581 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-7243 since 12/09/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
