Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software) (affected version not known). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component X.509 Certificate. The manipulation as part of a IPAdressFamily Extension leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
While parsing an IPAdressFamily extension in an X.509 certificate, it is possible to do a one-byte overread. This would result in an incorrect text display of the certificate. This bug has been present since 2006 and is present in all versions of OpenSSL since then.
The bug was discovered 08/28/2017. The weakness was presented 08/28/2017 by OSS-Fuzz with Google (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-3735 since 12/16/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/16/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104729 (Fedora 26 : 1:compat-openssl10 (2017-7f30914972)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237021 (Red Hat Update for openssl (RHSA-2018:3221)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
