ARM mbed TLS before 1.3.21 and 2.x before 2.1.9, if optional authentication is configured, allows remote attackers to bypass peer authentication via an X.509 certificate chain with many intermediates. NOTE: although mbed TLS was formerly known as PolarSSL, the releases shipped with the PolarSSL name are not affected.
The bug was discovered 08/28/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/30/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-14032 since 08/30/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction.
