FFmpeg 3.3.3 asf_read_marker ASF File resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 3.3.3 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function asf_read_marker. The manipulation as part of a ASF File leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In FFmpeg 3.3.3, a DoS in asf_read_marker() due to lack of an EOF (End of File) check might cause huge CPU and memory consumption. When a crafted ASF file, which claims a large "name_len" or "count" field in the header but does not contain sufficient backing data, is provided, the loops over the name and markers would consume huge CPU and memory resources, since there is no EOF check inside these loops.

The bug was discovered 08/25/2017. The weakness was published 08/31/2017 by Security Team (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14057 since 08/31/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103289 (openSUSE Security Update : ffmpeg / ffmpeg2 (openSUSE-2017-1067)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176709 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1630-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103289) and SecurityFocus (BID 100630†). Similar entries are available at VDB-102891, VDB-102892, VDB-106022 and VDB-106023. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
