HiveManager Classic 8.0r1/8.1r1 Backup Archive maps input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in HiveManager Classic 8.0r1/8.1r1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file HiveManager/tomcat/webapps/hm/domains/$yourtenant/maps of the component Backup Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

HiveManager Classic through 8.1r1 allows arbitrary JSP code execution by modifying a backup archive before a restore, because the restore feature does not validate pathnames within the archive. An authenticated, local attacker - even restricted as a tenant - can add a jsp at HiveManager/tomcat/webapps/hm/domains/$yourtenant/maps (it will be exposed at the web interface).

The bug was discovered 08/28/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/01/2017 by Sandro Zaccarini (guly) as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at ush.it. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-14105 since 09/01/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability allows a local user, even restricted as a Tenant, to upload a backup archive that contain jsp webshell, therefore to execute code on underlying system.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. The advisory contains the following remark:

As main HM admin, create a group with no "Administration -> HiveManager Operations -> Restore Database // Back Up Database" and "Administration -> Administrators" privilege. Now switch to every VHM and change group to their users.
