Linux Kernel up to 4.11 net/ipv4/tcp.c __tcp_disconnect divide by zero

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11 (Operating System). This affects the function __tcp_disconnect of the file net/ipv4/tcp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a divide by zero vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-369. The product divides a value by zero. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The tcp_disconnect function in net/ipv4/tcp.c in the Linux kernel before 4.12 allows local users to cause a denial of service (__tcp_select_window divide-by-zero error and system crash) by triggering a disconnect within a certain tcp_recvmsg code path.

The bug was discovered 05/18/2017. The weakness was presented 09/01/2017 by Andrey Konovalov as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-14106 since 09/01/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 106 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103363 (Debian DLA-1099-1 : linux security update (BlueBorne) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196934 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-raspi2 Vulnerabilities (USN-3443-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103363) and SecurityFocus (BID 100878†). See VDB-105605, VDB-106127, VDB-106121 and VDB-106733 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
