A vulnerability was found in OpenJPEG 2.2.0 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function opj_j2k_write_sot in the library lib/openjp2/j2k.c of the component Incomplete Fix. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. A size-validation issue was discovered in opj_j2k_write_sot in lib/openjp2/j2k.c in OpenJPEG 2.2.0. The vulnerability causes an out-of-bounds write, which may lead to remote denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow affecting opj_write_bytes_LE in lib/openjp2/cio.c) or possibly remote code execution. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2017-14152.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/06/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-14164 since 09/06/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104069 (GLSA-201710-26 : OpenJPEG: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170389 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for openjpeg2 (SUSE-SU-2017:2649-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
