Details
A vulnerability has been found in Xen up to 4.9.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function alloc_heap_pages. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A parameter verification issue was discovered in Xen through 4.9.x. The function `alloc_heap_pages` allows callers to specify the first NUMA node that should be used for allocations through the `memflags` parameter; the node is extracted using the `MEMF_get_node` macro. While the function checks to see if the special constant `NUMA_NO_NODE` is specified, it otherwise does not handle the case where `node >= MAX_NUMNODES`. This allows an out-of-bounds access to an internal array.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was shared 09/12/2017 by Matthew Daley as XSA-231 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-14316 since 09/12/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
