Xen up to 4.9.x alloc_heap_pages Parameter out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Xen up to 4.9.x. This issue affects the function alloc_heap_pages. This manipulation as part of Parameter causes out-of-bounds. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14316. The attack can only be executed locally. There is no exploit available. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Xen up to 4.9.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function alloc_heap_pages. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A parameter verification issue was discovered in Xen through 4.9.x. The function `alloc_heap_pages` allows callers to specify the first NUMA node that should be used for allocations through the `memflags` parameter; the node is extracted using the `MEMF_get_node` macro. While the function checks to see if the special constant `NUMA_NO_NODE` is specified, it otherwise does not handle the case where `node >= MAX_NUMNODES`. This allows an out-of-bounds access to an internal array.

The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was shared 09/12/2017 by Matthew Daley as XSA-231 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-14316 since 09/12/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103381 (Citrix XenServer Multiple Vulnerabilities (CTX227185)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390072 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for (OVMSA-2017-0153)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103381) and SecurityFocus (BID 100818†). The entries VDB-106431 and VDB-106432 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
