A vulnerability has been found in Poppler 0.59.0 (Document Reader Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function XRef::parseEntry of the file XRef.cc of the component PDF Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. In Poppler 0.59.0, a NULL Pointer Dereference exists in the XRef::parseEntry() function in XRef.cc via a crafted PDF document.
The bug was discovered 09/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/17/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-14517 since 09/17/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
