The Linux kernel, as used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, kernel-rt, and Enterprise MRG 2 and when booted with UEFI Secure Boot enabled, allows local users to bypass intended securelevel/secureboot restrictions by leveraging improper handling of secure_boot flag across kexec reboot.
The bug was discovered 10/14/2015. The weakness was released 09/19/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7837 since 10/15/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 47 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87135 (CentOS 7 : kernel (CESA-2015:2152)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157890 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2019-4316)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
