A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GraphicsMagick 1.3.26 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects the function ReadOneJNGImage of the file coders/png.c. ReadOneJNGImage in coders/png.c in GraphicsMagick version 1.3.26 does not properly validate JNG data, leading to a denial of service (assertion failure in magick/pixel_cache.c, and application crash).
The bug was discovered 09/19/2017. The weakness was published 09/21/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at hg.code.sf.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14649 since 09/21/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170739 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2018:0350-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
