A vulnerability has been found in WordPress (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Template List View. Before version 4.8.2, WordPress allowed a Cross-Site scripting attack in the template list view via a crafted template name.
The bug was discovered 09/19/2017. The weakness was released 09/23/2017 by Security Team (Alex) with WordPress Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-14720 since 09/23/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103793 (Debian DSA-3997-1 : wordpress - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176177 (Debian Security Update for wordpress (DSA 3997-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
