Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.28/2.6.9 (Operating System). This affects the function ip_options_get. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Memory leak in the ip_options_get function in the Linux kernel before 2.6.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by repeatedly calling the ip_cmsg_send function.
The bug was discovered 12/15/2004. The weakness was released 12/15/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at guninski.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1335 since 01/06/2005. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22609 (Debian DSA-1067-1 : kernel-source-2.4.16 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18524), Exploit-DB (692), Tenable (22609), SecurityFocus (BID 11956†) and OSVDB (13535†).
