Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in GNU binutils 2.29 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function read_formatted_entries of the file dwarf2.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
read_formatted_entries in dwarf2.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 09/27/2017. The weakness was shared 09/30/2017 as Bug 22210 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-14933 since 09/29/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
