Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.29.1 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function dump_relocs_in_section of the file objdump.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The dump_relocs_in_section function in objdump.c in GNU Binutils 2.29.1 does not check for reloc count integer overflows, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (excessive memory allocation, or heap-based buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PE file.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2017. The weakness was released 12/04/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-17122 since 12/04/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119162 (GLSA-201811-17 : Binutils: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
